Helen Yates: Welcome to the Navigating Risk podcast where we take a deep dive into the trends shaping the global risk landscape. In this episode I talk to Gallagher’s cyber security guru, Johnty Mongan, about what companies should do in the immediate aftermath of a cyber-attack. As head of the Gallagher Cyber Defence Centre, Johnty has dealt with many a crisis. And so, I began by asking him why it is so important to map out your incident response before the worst happens.
So, shall we start by looking at why you want to talk about incident response and why this is something that you think clients need to know a little bit more about.
Johnty Mongan: Having got so many 2:00am phone calls from clients in distress I think when we talk about responding to an incident and you see all of the various LinkedIn posts, the reality of actually going through it with a client you're kind of with this business for four to six weeks.
Firstly, it's incredibly distressing and the second piece is how much they vary. No breach response is ever the same twice and there's always something new that crops up and no matter how many times I've been through it, there is always this element of surprise. So I just think it's a fascinating topic. Things can change really quickly based on so many different inputs that go into responding to a breach successfully. So, I think it'll be something that everyone will enjoy just to hear some war stories about.
