Stages of a disease classification
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. (CDC) provides 4 stages:
- Sporadic – a disease or infection that occurs infrequently and irregularly
- Endemic – a disease or infection that has a constant presence in a geographic area
- Epidemic – for a given population area, a sudden increase in the number of cases of the disease or infection is reported
- Pandemic – the disease has spread over several countries or continents impacting a large number of people and communities
