Pål Sydengen's journey into the insurance industry was not conventional. With a Maritime Studies and Shipping Management background, his trajectory shifted when he discovered marine insurance during his studies in Singapore. Can you tell us about your journey into the insurance industry?
I took a course in Maritime Studies and Shipping Management and initially had no intention of entering the insurance industry. However, during my time as a student in Singapore, I discovered marine insurance and found it to be a perfect fit for my skills and interests. I was introduced to the industry by a professor who had connections in the Norwegian Marine Insurance industry, and I have been working in insurance ever since.
How was your experience studying in Singapore?
Studying in Singapore was an incredible experience. The course was initially designed for part-time students, but I chose to study it full-time. I had classes in the evenings and weekends, giving me time off during the day. My primary motivation for studying in Singapore was to experience living in a different country and discover something new. Little did I know that it would shape my professional path in such a significant way.
Can you talk about your transition from your previous company to Gallagher?
After spending a decade at my first employer, another insurance broker, I became increasingly curious about other companies within the industry. I was eager for new challenges. When Anders, the CEO of Bergvall Marine — which later became Gallagher — approached me about an opportunity there, it felt like the right move at the right time, and still does!
The transition to Gallagher was relatively smooth, as Bergvall Marine was already part of the Gallagher family when I joined. While there have been some changes in branding and resources, the core values and work culture have remained consistent. Overall, it has been a positive experience, especially with the merger with Parisco, which further expanded our presence in Norway.
What is your role at Gallagher, and what does a typical day involve?
Being an insurance broker at Gallagher, a typical day starts with sorting out my inbox and handling administrative tasks. From there, I will have meetings or calls with clients, insurers, or colleagues to discuss various aspects of our work. Whether advising clients, negotiating deals, or staying updated on market trends, each day brings new challenges and opportunities.
How does your role contribute to the overall success of Gallagher?
I handle servicing several larger accounts and work closely with my colleagues. Over the years, I have gained trust among my clients and insurers, which is crucial in our industry. My contribution to the company lies in my ability to solve problems and ensure client satisfaction. I apply my experience and knowledge to drive processes forward, contributing to the achievements of the business here in Norway — and helping us to be instrumental in Gallagher's overall success as a global company.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I find great satisfaction in getting people on board and finding solutions to problems. Building trust with clients and insurers is essential to me, and when everyone involved is satisfied with the outcome, it feels like a job well done. I particularly enjoy working on complex cases that require strategic thinking and finding the best solutions for our clients.
