Christine Heiberg is a valued member of the Gallagher team specialising in crew claims. With her expertise and dedication, Christine offers a glimpse into the dynamic world of marine insurance and the rewarding experiences it brings.
Can you tell us a bit about your role at Gallagher and what a typical day might look like for you?
My main focus is on crew claims within the claims department. A typical day involves handling deductible invoices from various Protection and Indemnity (P&I) clubs, ensuring timely processing and payment. Given the global nature of maritime operations, each day presents new challenges as we navigate different time zones and urgent matters.
What do you most enjoy about your role and working in the insurance industry?
One of the things I love most is the diversity of challenges each day brings. No two cases are alike, and I enjoy the mix of routine tasks and new challenges. Additionally, working in insurance allows me to interact with many people, fostering professional growth and meaningful connections.
Can you describe your time at Gallagher so far and how your role has developed?
I joined Gallagher in 2018, coming from a role at a P&I club. The shift to the broker side gave me a broader perspective and allowed me to see different approaches to maritime insurance. With the support of my colleagues, I have embraced new challenges and continue to learn and grow every day.
Do you prefer working on the broker side of the marine insurance industry?
I find working on the broker side interesting. It allows me to see different approaches from different P&I clubs and handlers. I get a bigger picture and analyse statistics before starting the renewal process. It is a challenging but rewarding experience.
How does your role fit within the team and contribute to the success of Gallagher?
As part of the claims department, I manage crew claims and ensure timely communication and resolution. By diligently managing the dedicated claims inbox, which is essential to comply with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), I gain a comprehensive understanding of all Crew Claims-related matters. This entails handling a substantial volume of emails pertaining to Crew Claims and ensuring that each one is appropriately tracked and addressed. While some emails may require minimal action, such as filing, the primary focus is on maintaining control over the inbox and having a clear overview of the situation. This responsibility provides a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in effectively managing and organising the influx of emails related to Crew Claims. The collaborative atmosphere at Gallagher fosters teamwork and ensures we deliver exceptional service to our clients.
Reflecting on your time at Gallagher, what has been your most memorable experience?
Navigating crew claims during the COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences. The constantly changing regulations and global restrictions posed unique challenges, but I am proud of how our team adapted and supported clients during uncertain times.
What is the social aspect of Gallagher like?
Gallagher understands the importance of building strong relationships within the team. We not only work together but also engage in social activities to strengthen our bonds. For example, we recently had a memorable trip to the Norwegian mountains. It was a weekend filled with skiing, dinners, and getting to know each other outside the office. It was an excellent opportunity to bond with my colleagues and create lasting memories. Additionally, quarterly team meetings provide a mix of work-related discussions and social activities, strengthening our team dynamics and fostering a supportive work environment.
What are your aspirations for your future at Gallagher, and what advice would you give someone interested in pursuing a similar role?
While I am content in my current role, I appreciate the opportunities for growth and advancement at Gallagher. I advise aspiring insurance professionals to remain open-minded, embrace new challenges, and prioritise continuous learning. Gallagher provides a supportive environment where individuals can thrive and excel in their careers.
What are the top three things you appreciate about working for Gallagher?
Gallagher offers stability in an ever-changing industry, providing a sense of security for its employees. Its supportive and collaborative culture fosters strong relationships among colleagues, making work enjoyable and rewarding. Finally, the abundance of opportunities for personal and professional growth ensures that every day has challenges and learning experiences.
