Executive summary
While the Caribbean constitutes a tiny part of global emissions, it is disproportionately more vulnerable to extreme events. Rapid climate change caused by carbon emissions from human activities has increased sea levels and increased the ranges and severity of hurricanes, threatening Caribbean coastal cities with both natural catastrophe and economic decline.
As a region particularly vulnerable to climate change, the Caribbean is particularly invested in plans for climate resilience and to reduce CO2 emissions. This article explores the disproportionate effects of climate change on countries in the Caribbean, specific resilience and risk reduction programs in the region, and the costliest catastrophe peril of all: hurricanes.
